“I’ve been growing media companies for over three decades now and I’ve seen my industry rapidly evolve. It’s easy to feel a sense of anxiety as the world changes, particularly when people look to you as a source of guidance and leadership, so I decided to explore new forms of knowledge by returning to university.
After studying for an Executive MSc, one of my professors suggested I connect with the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) as he felt their work aligned with my areas of interest. I applied for the Strategic Innovation Management MSc to advance my learning journey, but I didn’t realise how transformative it would be in my professional life too.
My business is rooted in healthcare and Sussex offered me a new vocabulary for engaging with clients and colleagues. I began translating things I’d been trying to say for years into language that resonated, and noticed a real shift in the conversations and collaborations I was fostering.
Crucially, my Masters also supported me to develop my own innovation model. I had space to analyse existing frameworks while experimenting with my own ideas and by the time I graduated, I’d already started introducing a new model in health systems with major international businesses. As a result, my company is thriving and my employees’ livelihoods are more secure – all because I was encouraged to put my learning into practice.
I think Sussex offers such a rich learning experience because it’s humble, human and filled with opportunity. My tutors were brilliant people who were genuinely passionate about their subjects and energised by enthusiasm, and one has even offered to help me publish my innovation model, which I’m grateful for.
Graduation is the end of some people’s journeys, but for me, it was only the beginning. I’m now hoping to study for another Masters in Quantum Technologies because I want to feel more connected to the world my children will be living in.
