Sanctions

This page will explain why it is important to comply with sanctions laws, which areas are sanctioned, and how to complete a sanctions assessment.

Why are sanctions important?

The University must comply with UK and international sanctions laws. Non-compliance can lead to fines, withdrawal of funding, and reputational damage. Therefore, if you plan to travel to or conduct any activity (such as working, researching or signing a contract) with individuals or entities from sanctioned countries you must ensure compliance with the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½Ó°ÊÓ Sanctions Policy [PDF 171.71KB] and request a sanctions assessment from the relevant Professional Services team.

Which countries and regions are sanctioned?

The below lists are set by our banking partners and must be complied with. Countries and regions on the broad list have almost all economic activity sanctioned. Countries and regions on the narrow list have sanctions applied to specific entities. In both cases you will need a sanctions assessment for any proposed activity with or travel to these countries. Furthermore, please note that travel to these countries may have implications for your insurance cover and is likely to incur additional cost that will need to be considered when you are getting approval for your travel.

How do I request a sanctions assessment?

You will need to contact the relevant Professional Services team (as listed below) with details of the proposed activity. Please note that this includes any travel to a sanctioned country or region such as to conduct fieldwork, visit an overseas partner or attend a conference. They will then check to see if an assessment has been completed and if not, will complete one for you. You must wait for the team to confirm the outcome of the assessment and advise if you have approval to procced before engaging in the proposed activity.
