Chemistry
Chemistry Laboratory 1
Module code: F1002
Level 4
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Workshop, Laboratory, Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework
This module will introduce you to the organisation, process, analysis and discussion of data from chemistry laboratory experiments.
You’ll cover:
- synthesis, product and compound analysis
- results processing
- presenting results in a well-structured scientific report.
You’ll apply these skills using data from actual laboratory experiments involving:
- simple organic synthesis
- separation
- characterisation techniques.
You’ll learn and apply essential techniques to determine key physical parameters including enthalpy and vaporpressure of some compounds.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge for assessing Health and Safety in the laboratory, writing COSHH forms and report scientific results from experiments in the form of lab reports
- Show knowledge of the objectives, the methodologies and establishing the rationales of experimental procedures in a typical chemistry experiment setup.
- Demonstrate a good overview and understanding of transferable basic laboratory practical skills and techniques within the frame of organic and physical chemistry experiments.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the underlying concepts and principles of some key techniques to analyse reaction outcomes and characterize compounds.
