On this module, you’ll examine the following across a range of family forms:

  • family functioning
  • family relationships
  • child development.

You’ll explore individual, dyadic, family and cultural-level factors that influence the development and functioning of family relationships.

The module will cover the main theoretical approaches to the study of the family but will emphasise recent empirical research. A focus on diverse family forms runs throughout the module, such as:

  • LGBTQ+ families
  • families formed through third-party assisted reproduction.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of empirical research within family psychology.
  • Apply different theoretical approaches to the study of family phenomena.
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of psychological research on the family.
  • Use knowledge of the academic literature within family psychology to address societal assumptions about different families.
