Pre-requisite

This module will examine cognitive processes in older adulthood, and the neural basis of healthy and pathological changes that are observed in different cognitive domains. It will describe the clinical and functional consequences of age-related changes in cognitive performance, and it will describe the risk and protective factors associated with the most common organic dementias. It will examine current treatment options and future treatment possibilities for dementia, considering both drug and behaviour change options.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of healthy and pathological changes in cognitive processes in older adults.
  • Understand the main brain changes in healthy ageing and dementia, and how they relate to cognitive changes.
  • Understand key treatments and interventions for dementia and their limitations.
  • Be able to explain and critically evaluate evidence from psychological studies in written and oral formats.
