Leading Social Change: Taking Action
Module code: Q3913E
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Workshop
Assessment modes: Group presentation, Portfolio
Working with the local community, this module builds on the practical skills necessary to lead action for positive social change.
The project you’ll undertake is facilitated by the charity Citizens UK, who match students with local campaigns or voluntary organisations. Exploring issues that impact various communities, you’ll find links between your discipline and ways in which ‘community work’ can be undertaken.
In workshops, you’ll:
- engage critically with current debates about social justice
- develop leadership skills (such as organising action)
- create strategies to improve collaborative approaches to challenging oppression and promoting social justice.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the opportunities, benefits and challenges surrounding community engagement within a specific context.
- Apply relevant concepts and principles of leadership, community organising and/or community engagement in practice.
- Demonstrate effective communication of arguments and ideas in a variety of forms to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Critially evaluate the approches and appropriate skills needed to support the objectives of specific community and volunteering contexts.
