In late 2025, Rohan McCarthy-Gill, Head of Global Mobility at the 天美传媒影视, was re-elected for a third two-year term as Chair of Butex British Student Mobility, the UK’s sector body representing and advocating for higher education global student mobility professionals and teams.
Rohan has served as Chair since 2021, following a prior term as Treasurer. He assumed the role at a particularly challenging moment for the sector, during the latter stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, when global mobility programmes were under acute operational and strategic pressure. Since then, and working closely with the executive committee and the Butex member community, he has overseen a period of consolidation and growth for the organisation.
Today, Butex brings together more than 100 UK universities and sector organisations, providing a national platform for collaboration, professional development, and advocacy. Under Rohan’s chairmanship, the organisation has delivered eight annual conferences and winter workshops across the UK, strengthening regional engagement and peer learning. Internationally, Butex has also maintained a strong and visible presence at the annual NAFSA international education exhibition in the United States, a platform for UK professionals to engage with overseas partners and colleagues to create and build on global education collaborations that support the over 40,000 students from the UK annually engaging in global study opportunities.
Reflecting on his reappointment, Rohan emphasised the collective impact of the organisation’s work. “What motivates me most about Butex is that the work of our members ultimately shapes students’ lives. Global student mobility is consistently linked to improved employability, academic attainment, cross-cultural literacy, confidence, adaptability, resilience, and a deeper sense of global citizenship. Behind every successful mobility experience is a dedicated professional community, and Butex exists to support and champion that expertise.”
After a career spent working in international education, Rohan sees his continued chairmanship as an opportunity to give back to the sector in this volunteer capacity, supporting colleagues as they navigate an increasingly complex but deeply rewarding field. For institutions across the UK, including Sussex, engagement with Butex provides a vital connection to sector insight, shared practice, and a collective voice on the future of global student mobility.
